All this week we've been celebrating the Story of WIF, looking back over the history, people, campaigns, events and partnerships that have brought us to where we are today. And where are we today is a 10,000-strong organisation! The Women in Football team were so excited to hit this incredible membership milestone that we decided to reach out to our 10,000th member, Izzy Mowatt of Brentford FC, for a quick Q&A...
Welcome to Women in Football, Izzy! How did you find out about WIF and what made you decide to join?
I’ve always been aware of Women in Football. The odd post had popped up on LinkedIn and I saw that some of the Lionesses have been part of events, but I never looked into it any further. After joining Brentford this year, I was encouraged to join the community after seeing what women at the club were getting from being members. The girls in my team went on the WIF Leadership Course, and that prompted me to sign up to be a member and get involved with courses and events.
Please tell us about the work you do at Brentford FC.
As one of the club’s marketing executives, I work across a range of club and fan campaigns. On a day-to-day basis I could be working on anything from memberships to youth, fan, and community engagement, or promotions for fixtures amongst other things. I’ve been with Brentford for three months now and I love how involved I am with the club’s many varied projects. I really enjoy bringing different ideas to the team and learning from the amazing people I work with!
"When I joined Brentford, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my team has an almost even balance of men and women. I immediately felt that I was in a welcoming and comfortable working environment"
Brentford are an active corporate member of WIF with a strong reputation for equality, diversity, and inclusion. Is that borne out in your experience as an employee?
Yes, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Brentford, and I saw this as soon as I joined. When I started, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my team has an almost even balance of men and women. I immediately felt that I was in a welcoming and comfortable working environment. In my first week, I received training from the club’s equality, diversity and inclusion team about events and opportunities that were available to me. As someone who has never worked specifically in football before, this proactive approach gave me an immediate and positive impression of Brentford's genuine commitment to advancing gender equality and promoting Women in Football.
What are you looking forward to about being part of WIF, and what does it mean to become our 10,000th member?
I’m honoured to be the 10,000th member! I’m excited to join a vibrant community who share my passion for the industry. I’m looking forward to taking full advantage of the opportunities to learn from and connect with others through courses, events, and networking. Importantly for me, I am really looking forward to making meaningful connections with other women in the industry.
