Women in Football is pleased to see that the UK government agrees that all ten recommendations made by Raising the Bar, the government-commissioned independent review into the future of women’s football led by Karen Carney MBE, should be actioned.
We are particularly encouraged by the call to prioritise the development of a workforce strategy, as well as for a safe, supportive and professional working environment for players.
Turning recommendations into reality will be complex, involving many stakeholders across the game. For this reason we welcome the proposal to establish an implementation group tasked with determining responsibilities for action and driving accountability. We also welcome the government’s proposal to share learnings from the review with other women’s sports.
Women in Football’s considerable expertise in the workforce and governance of football is built on the insights and experiences of our 8,500 members; on the partnerships we have developed with other organisations in the industry; and on the practical support we have given to employers in diversifying their staff and building inclusive cultures. Our directors Jane Purdon and Kelly Simmons OBE contributed significantly to Raising the Bar itself, the former as a member of the review’s expert panel, and other directors also contributed directly or indirectly.
We are ready and prepared to share that expertise in any way that can help the implementation of this important work.
