WEST HAM WOMEN TARGET GRASSROOTS IMPACT WITH FOUR #GETONSIDE PLEDGES

Dozens of organisations and people have joined the #GetOnside initiative led by Women in Football, and every single action makes a difference. But one especially enthusiastic club has left nothing to chance by coming forward with an amazing four pledges of support for the campaign.

The actions planned by West Ham United FC Women are geared towards the development of grassroots football for girls and women in their local area. For United's General Manager Aidan Boxall, it's about widening participation in the game and enriching the lives of young people.

"Being involved in the #GetOnside movement was a no-brainer for us," Aidan says. "Having previously been a coach and a teacher, I have always been passionate about providing opportunities for young people.

Life-changing

"Football is a great way to provide these life-changing opportunities, to bring people together and drive social change – which I hope we can help to achieve by being part of the #GetOnside campaign."

As well as the obvious benefits for women and girls in football, #GetOnside is good for the organisations taking part. While Aidan's prime motivation is to make a positive difference in West Ham's local community, he also hopes the initiative will boost the club's support.

West Ham United Women's four #GetOnside pledges
  • We pledge to #GetOnside by supporting the development of women's and girls' football in east London and Essex

  • We pledge to #GetOnside by building on the partnerships with our sister clubs – Tigers JFC, Grays Athletic Girls, FC Redwings, Vicky Park Rangers and Nutmeg Academy – and encouraging more women and girls to take up the sport

  • We pledge to #GetOnside by sharing our resources and supporting expertise with those involved in our sister clubs

  • We pledge to #GetOnside by providing our sister clubs with tickets to our women’s home games, organising for the players to attend our sister clubs' training sessions and inviting our sister clubs' coaches to bespoke events

He explains: "We are delighted to be involved in the #GetOnside campaign. Women’s football is the fastest growing sport in the country and speaking personally and also as a club, we want to make the most of this. Our involvement in the campaign is another way for us to show our commitment to growing the sport within our local community.

"We want to give as many women and girls in east London and Essex the opportunity to get involved in football, whilst also encouraging people to come and support West Ham United Women’s team."

Sustainable

#GetOnside is designed to bring about change that is long-term and sustainable – a vision that very much resonates with West Ham's intentions. Aidan says: "We would love for a young girl to come through our player pathway and to play in the West Ham United Women’s first team one day. We would also love to see the development of local female coaches who can help to inspire the next generation.

"Our long-term ambition is that in 10 years' time we can look back and know that we have provided a platform for people in our community – and be proud of the impact that we have had on their lives."
