Susie Petruccelli's story is one so many girls and women can relate to as she grew up in a sports-mad, male-dominated family, fighting to find her own identity and path.

And Susie did just that.

After winning a place on the soccer programme at Harvard University, crossing paths, and playing against, US internationals Julie Foudy, Brianna Scurry and Shannon MacMillan Susie felt on top of the world.

She was clearly talented, strong, loved and worthy. But less than a year later, however, it had all slipped away.

In 2018 Susie saw a tweet announcing a partnership between Women in Football and Floodlit Dreams, a publishing company owned by Ian Ridley, who wanted to support the #WhatIf campaign.

Floodlit Dreams pledged to give practical help to empower women in the game, and guarantee publication of a book by a female football writer.

The prize was subsequently named after Ian's wife Vikki Orvice, a dear friend of WiF and board member who died of cancer aged 56 in February 2019.

Susie's script fought off strong competition to win the inaugural Vikki Orvice Book Prize with 'Raised a Warrior' telling her story in an honest, human and cathartic way of how Susie, as player and mother, rediscovers herself and the love of a game that almost broke her.

Alongside this narrative, she also examines the growth of the women’s game and the issues still confronting the sport as it fights for the equalities it deserves.

We are delighted to be offering a special price of £10 + postage & packaging when you order 'Raised a Warrior' direct from Floodlit Dreams. Please click here and use promo code  ZX9HFH6J at checkout to receive the discount.
