WOMENXFOOTBALL=ART exhibition opens shining a light on women's passion for the beautiful game

There are many ways of actively helping to change the football landscape - and Jill Iliffe is doing just that with a solo art exhibition of paintings and drawings celebrating women with a passion for the beautiful game.

WOMENXFOOTBALL=ART, to be held at the Depot Cinema in Lewes, Sussex, will showcase some stunning pieces by Jill, who has already her piece 'Banned' displayed at the National Football Museum as part of last year's 'Football Is Art' exhibition.

For her latest exhibition, Jill was given access by Lewes FC to past, current and future players as well as the club's supporters.

Using football as a starting point, she was fascinated by their approach to life and saw parallels with others pushing against the tide to create a life that fulfils them.

"I contacted Lewes because they treat their women players equally and suggested my project to them," said Jill. "This was over a year ago and it took some time to get going, but I eventually met with players.

"I wanted it to be wider, though, so then met with supporters, a player from the 1950s who played for a mill team and a walking football player who was not allowed to play football once she went to secondary school.

"It was important to me to show women with a passion for what they do, so I interviewed them all as well as painted them. I wanted to understand."

Opening on Monday 11 until Saturday 30 November 2019, WOMENXFOOTBALL=ART is free to visit and the paintings are for sale. It is best to check the opening times first as they can vary. Please click here for details.

If visiting midweek, visitors should contact the venue via email at lewesdepot.org as on occasion the room is not open to the public if it is being used for another event.
