Double delight for Ellen White at the FA Women's Football Awards

Ellen White - double winner at the FA Women's Football Awards

Ellen White was a double winner at the FA Women’s Football Awards, which celebrated another great year for women’s football at The Brewery in London.

The event was streamed live on @FAWSL thanks to Sporf, who are already putting into practice their #WhatIf pledge to amplify the reach of women’s football to online communities.

Birmingham City and England international striker Ellen capped a fine individual season by claiming both the England Women's Player of the Year and Women's Super League 1's leading goalscorer award.

The 29-year-old, who scored 15 goals during the 2017/18 campaign, saw off stiff competition from Millie Bright, Fran Kirby, Nikita Parris and Demi Stokes who were also shortlisted for main prize.

Ellen, who was unable to attend the ceremony, took to Twitter to celebrate, stating:

Wow. I’m so honoured, proud and in shock about winning this award. Thank you to everyone that voted, playing for @England and being a @Lionesses is a dream and a privilege.

Ann-Katrin Berger, the Birmingham City goalkeeper who returned from thyroid cancer treatment after just two months, was named joint Women’s Super League Players’ Player of the Year, alongside Manchester City’s Jill Scott.

Arsenal's Beth Mead claimed the England Young Women’s Player of the Year trophy after making her Lionesses debut against Wales in April and winning the WSL Continental Tyres Cup with her club.

Emma Hayes may need to invest in another cabinet after adding yet another trophy to her collection, the WSL Head Coach of the Year award, in a year that saw her guide Chelsea Women to a League and FA Cup double.

There were also special presentations to trailblazer Sue Lopez MBE and journalist Tony Leighton.

Sue, 72, played in 10 FA Cup finals with Southampton and coached Wales in a career spanning five decades whilst Tony's written coverage of the women's game was perfectly summed up by England legend Casey Stoney, who said: “He was there when no one cared and he stayed when other people started to care".

Jackie Batten-Lincoln was named as the FA's Unsung Hero for her contribution to football, and Reading in particlar.
