Faye Lygo steps down as chair of FAWSL 2 title winners Doncaster Belles

Faye Lygo - outgoing chair of newly crowned FAWSL 2 champions Doncaster Belles

Faye Lygo has stepped down as chair of newly crowned WSL 2 champions Doncaster Belles - and has confirmed that the club are in talks about integrating with Doncaster Rovers men's football club.

Despite finishing 10 points clear of second-placed Brighton & HA, Belles will remain in the second tier as they cannot afford a licence to play in the top flight from next season.

As part of restructuring, clubs had to apply to play in WSL 1 for 2018-19 and Belles were unable to reach the necessary criteria, missing out despite their on-field success.

"The board have concluded this (integrating) is the best option going forward," said Faye, who has overseen promotion to and relegation from the top tierduring her five-year stint as chair.

"It would give the Belles the best chance of joining the top tier of women's football. Discussions have been ongoing over the last 12 months and we hope for a positive response from Doncaster Rovers.

"It is really unfair that the Belles are not being promoted on the basis of their football abilities.

"Sadly, it is money in the bank that counts for promotion and I am sorry to have disappointed fans that we could only afford to bid to retain a second tier licence.

"I congratulate Brighton for meeting those requirements and for effectively being promoted ahead of us.

"I will remain as a strong supporter of the Belles and I am looking forward to watching the games next season as an ordinary supporter."
