Former England captain Casey Stoney was honoured by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) when she was awarded a Special Achievement award at this year's event.

Casey, who retired from football this year, received a standing ovation at Sunday night's glitzy ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel - and rightly so.

Casey, who hung up her playing boots earlier this year to take up a new challenge as part of Lionesses boss Phil Neville's coaching set-up, enjoyed a glittering playing career in which she won 130 caps, was part of the squad that claimed a bronze medal at the 2015 Women's World Cup and skippered the Great Britain team at the 2012 London Olympics.

"I think this award is recognition of all the hard work, the dedication, not just me, but my family, my coaches and the managers who have worked with me over the years," said Casey, who was awarded an MBE for her services to football in 2015.

"I don't think anyone is successful without the help of others so this is amazing, especially to get this from the PFA. The award is for everyone who has supported me too."
