Mustangs FC is coming to CBBC on Monday 2 April - a new Australian comedy-drama about a girls' football team
Mustangs FC has been described as both "Bright, breezy and genuinely funny" and a "Feminist battle cry" - and now you can judge for yourself when this critically acclaimed new comedy-drama about girls football is aired on CBBC (Monday 2 April, 6.05pm).
Filmed in Australia, the 13-part series is about a group of 14-year-old girls who set up a football team, battling against the odds to achieve success and kicking against the grass ceiling that affects so many women in sport. It's a show about real, compelling relationships between young women and puts contemporary issues for teenage girls front and centre with humour and heart. It's aimed at girls who are over boys and beauty, instead preferring to celebrate female friendship in all its complexities.
Rachel Davis, producer of Mustangs FC, said: "We’ve got six new-to-television actresses who have a real diversity of background and body shape. We’re happy to be telling jokes about selfies, snapchat, sanitary bins and the peculiarly female challenges of peeing outside when changing room inequality means the boys are hogging the toilets.
"As well as being a redemptive sports drama about the highs and lows of the underdog and the uniting power of being part of a team, the episodes are about offering young girls a range of positive, active role models and showing them that whatever your social struggles, you can still find your tribe; whatever your body shape, you can still play sport and when a boy starts “mansplaining” the offside rule, you can give him the red card."
The input of women is not just obvious on screen, with over half of the crew involved in making the show women.
"We have had women taking the lead in every key creative role behind the camera and have given opportunities to young female talent at the start of their careers," added Rachel.
"We’re proud that the series employed 61% women, reinforcing positive female role models on screen and off. This is very unusual in television production but it feels like change is in the air right now and we are excited to be part of that movement."
Mustangs FC will be available to watch on both CBBC and BBC iPlayer.
